The US Treasury Department has sanctioned three Ethereum addresses, allegedly linked to hackers in North Korea. The addresses were added to the ‘blacklist’ to prevent North Korea from evading sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Nations.
The sanctioned addresses appear to be linked to the hacker group responsible for the theft of more than $ 600 million in cryptocurrencies from the sidechain Ronin of the Axie Infinity game.
Transactions recorded on the blockchain show that at least one of the wallet addresses linked to the Ronin hackers would have sent funds to cryptocurrency mixer services, including Tornado Cash.
Chainalysis reported in January that North Korea stole an estimated $ 400 million worth of cryptocurrencies through cyberattacks in 2021, meaning the theft of the Ronin network could represent its biggest loot to date. Illicit funds related to hacker groups of the reclusive nation are mainly composed of Ether, Bitcoin and other tokens.
